On August 18, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released its latest data on immigration applications.

The update covers permanent residence, temporary residence, & citizenship applications. The figures are based on data available as of June 30, 2026.

The data shows how many applications IRCC finalized during the first six months of the year and how many applications were still in its inventory.

IRCC finalized 2,011,375 applications between January and June 2026. Of these, 362,410 applications were finalized in June alone.

At the end of June, IRCC had 1,539,785 applications in its inventory. This was 22,015 more applications than the number recorded at the end of May.

Permanent Residence Applications

IRCC had 712,795 permanent residence applications in its inventory at the end of June. This was an increase of 7,480 applications compared with the previous month.

The permanent residence inventory includes three main groups: economic immigration, family immigration, and protection applications.

Economic Applications

The economic category had 249,555 applications waiting for a final decision as of June 30. This was 11,220 more than the number recorded at the end of May.

Around 77% of these applications were being handled, while the remaining 23% were waiting for available admission spaces under the federal immigration levels plan.

The economic category includes programs such as Express Entry, the Start-Up Visa Program, the Self-Employed Persons Program, the Provincial Nominee Program, and the Atlantic Immigration Program.

From January 1 to June 30, IRCC finalized 141,105 economic immigration applications. June accounted for 30,105 of these finalized applications.

Family Applications

The family category had 163,780 applications waiting for finalization at the end of June. This was 4,015 more than the previous month.

About 59% of these applications were being handled, while 41% were waiting for available spaces.

The family category includes applications related to family reunification and international adoptions. It covers sponsorship for spouses, partners, dependent children, and applications under the Parents and Grandparents Program.

IRCC finalized 54,520 family applications during the first six months of 2026. Of these, 8,620 were finalized in June.

Protection Applications

The protection category had 299,460 applications in the inventory at the end of June. This was 7,755 more than the figure reported at the end of May.

Protection applications made up the largest share of the permanent residence inventory.

Around 55% of these applications were being handled, while 45% were waiting for available spaces.

The category includes protected persons in Canada, government-assisted refugees, privately sponsored refugees, and applications made on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

IRCC finalized 55,295 protection applications between January and June. A total of 12,495 were finalized in June.

Temporary Residence Applications

At the end of June, IRCC had 401,280 temporary residence applications waiting for finalization.

This category includes study permits, work permits, and visitor visas.

Work Permits: IRCC had 27,655 work permit applications in its inventory at the end of June. This was a decrease of 7,385 compared with the previous month.

During the first six months of 2026, IRCC finalized 161,325 work permit applications. June accounted for 20,550 of these applications.

Study Permits: The number of study permit applications waiting for a decision reached 36,520 by the end of June. This was 4,855 higher than the previous month.

IRCC finalized 99,075 study permit applications between January and June. Of these, 24,705 were finalized in June.

Visitor Visas: There were 337,100 visitor visa applications waiting for a final decision at the end of June. This was 265 fewer than the number recorded at the end of May.

IRCC finalized 1,306,055 visitor visa applications during the first six months of 2026. June accounted for 232,300 finalized applications.

Citizenship Applications

IRCC reported 425,710 citizenship applications in its inventory at the end of June.

This category includes citizenship grant applications and applications for proof of citizenship.

Citizenship Grants: There were 326,365 citizenship grant applications waiting for a final decision at the end of June. This was a major decrease of 82,020 compared with the previous month.

IRCC reported 162,020 new Canadian citizens between January 1 and June 30. June accounted for 30,600 new citizens.

Proof Of Citizenship Certificates: IRCC had 99,520 applications for proof of citizenship certificates waiting for finalization at the end of June. This was 17,500 more than the previous month.

These applications include requests for new or replacement citizenship certificates.

IRCC issued 31,980 proof of citizenship certificates during the first six months of 2026. June accounted for 3,040 certificate issuances.
