A proof of citizenship certificate is the official document that confirms a person is already a Canadian citizen. It is often needed to apply for a Canadian passport & to access certain rights and services available to citizens.

Immigration officials require two main items:

For new paper applications, applicants should include a written explanation & all supporting evidence in the package. The envelope should clearly state:

This should be written in large, clear lettering.

Applicants who have already submitted a citizenship certificate application can still request urgent processing afterwards.

Moreover, those living in Canada or the United States can submit the request through the immigration department’s web form. The request should begin with the words:

“Request for urgent processing.”

Applicants outside Canada and the United States must contact the high commission, Canadian embassy, or consulate responsible for their application.

One important point is that applicants should never submit a second application to speed up the process.

If a duplicate application is submitted, immigration officials generally will not process the second file. The original application remains active, while the duplicate may simply be ignored.
